THE PUBLIC NOTEBOOK

Science notes, odd observations, and careful little tests.

Small Experiments, Big Trouble

A simple experiment can cause a great deal of trouble for a bad idea. That is part of the fun. One careful test can poke a hole in something that sounded very impressive yesterday.

Science does not always begin with a giant machine or a dramatic discovery. Sometimes it begins with a notebook, a measurement, and the annoying question: “Are we actually sure?”
